Two new films debut this weekend in theatres, neither making much of an impact when compared with the reigning box office champion. Wrath Of The Titans showed more whimper, while audiences fed Mirror Mirror a poison apple. As for The Hunger Games…well, find out after the jump!
The Hunger Games continued its box office dominance in its second weekend in theatres, grossing a fantastic $61 million. Though it’s a steep drop of 59% week to week for the film, it really doesn’t matter in the least. The Hunger Games has already grossed $250 million in North America, along with $113 million overseas, for a total gross so far of nearly $365 million. This is an amazing number, and by the time 2012 winds down, The Hunger Games should be one of the biggest performers of the year.
2010′s Clash of the Titans debut with more than $60 million, but its sequel Wrath of the Titans could barely make more than half that, debuting in second place this weekend with $34 million. While reviews have all cited that the 3D effects on this film are far superior to those of the original, the general consensus is that the film just isn’t very good. It’s currently sitting at just 24% fresh at Rotten Tomatoes. Wrath of the Titans has a way to go in North America for it to make back its $150 million budget.
Another disappointment this weekend has to be the Julia Roberts Snow White film Mirror Mirror, which could only muster up $19 million for third place at the box office. The hype for this film is certainly underwhelming when compared with its subject matter counterpart Snow White and The Huntsmen, due in theatres this summer. I wouldn’t expect to see Mirror Mirror last too long in theatres.
As for the rest of the top five, 21 Jump Street landed in fourth place with $15 million while Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax closed things out in fifth with $8 million.
So, to recap, here were our predictions:
1) The Hunger Games – $73 million

3) Mirror Mirror – $23 million
